What comes in a sourdough starter kit?

A good sourdough starter kit gives you a working culture and the few tools that make feeding it and baking with it easy, and nothing you will leave in a drawer. Every one of our kits is built around the same 30 year organic culture we bake with ourselves, sent dehydrated so it keeps in the cupboard until you are ready. Each kit then adds what you need for the next step: a WECK glass jar to keep the starter in, a jar scraper to keep it tidy, a dough scraper and a bread lame for shaping and scoring, and in the Baker's Kit a banneton, bread sling and Danish dough whisk.

Which sourdough kit should I choose?

  • The Beginner's Kit if you have never kept a starter. Culture, jar and jar scraper: add flour and water and you can start feeding the day it arrives.
  • The Top-Up Kit if you already have a jar and want a fresh culture, a lame and two scrapers for the bench.
  • The Top-Up Kit + Fridge Jar if you bake once a week or so and want a small WECK jar to keep your starter in the fridge between bakes.
  • The Baker's Kit if you want everything for your first loaf, start to finish, including the banneton to prove it in.

Fewer pieces, better tools

Some kits count every blade, band and stencil as a separate piece. Ours count the things you will actually use. Every tool is one we bake with in our own kitchen, and every item in a kit is shown above with its own price, so you can see exactly what you are paying for and exactly what the kit saves you.

Dehydrated or live starter?

The kits use our dehydrated culture because it travels well and waits patiently, which makes it the better choice for a present. It is dormant rather than dead and is lively again after two or three feeds. If you want to bake this week, the live sourdough starter arrives awake and ready to feed.

Want to choose every item yourself?

Our build your own sourdough kit page lets you pick the starter, jar, flour, banneton, lame and extras one by one, and it all ships together in one parcel. For a longer walk through what is worth buying first, read our guide to choosing a sourdough starter kit.

Sourdough kit questions

Presents, what is in the box, and how the saving works.

Is this a good present?

It works as one: everything arrives in a single box, the dehydrated starter keeps in the cupboard until they are ready to use it, and there is nothing else they need to buy before their first loaf. If you want it to land on a particular day, email us and we will hold the dispatch.

Which sourdough starter kit is best for beginners?

The Beginner's Kit if you want to get a starter going first and add tools later. The Baker's Kit if you would rather go straight on to a loaf, because it adds the banneton, lame, dough scraper and whisk. Not sure? The build your own sourdough kit page lets you pick item by item.

What do I need to start making sourdough?

A starter, a jar to keep it in, flour and water to feed it, and somewhere warm. For your first loaf you will also want a bowl, a dough scraper, a banneton to prove the dough in and a lame to score it. The Baker's Kit has all of the tools, so add a bag of strong white flour and you are set.

Do the kits include flour?

No. Flour is heavy and most bakers have a favourite. Any strong white bread flour will feed the starter, or you can add a bag from our flour range to the same parcel.

Why is the starter dehydrated?

It is the same 30 year culture either way, and the dehydrated one is dormant rather than dead. It keeps in the cupboard until whoever opens the box is ready to bake, so the kit can sit under a tree or in a drawer without anything going to waste. It wakes up with two or three feeds. If you want the live culture instead, it is on the starter page.

Can I change what is in a kit?

The banneton comes round for boules or oval for batards, and that choice is yours on the kit before you add it. The bread sling switches to match, so the shape is one decision rather than two. Everything else is the tool we would pick ourselves, so it is the same in every box. If you want a kit built your own way from the ground up, the build your own page lets you start from nothing.

How is the saving applied?

It goes on your basket automatically when you add a kit, before you reach the checkout. The price shown on each kit is what you will pay.
