Description
Live Sourdough Starter
Our Live Sourdough Starter is taken directly from a mature culture that has been maintained for over 30 years. Fully established and regularly fed, it arrives active and ready to become part of your baking routine
PLEASE NOTE
Your sourdough starter is a live, active culture. During transit it may continue to ferment and, in some cases, can expand enough to escape from the pot and into the sealed bag. If this happens, don’t worry, it is completely normal and does not affect the quality of the starter.
Simply scrape any starter from inside the sterile bag back into a clean container. You only need a small amount of healthy starter to get it going again, and once fed according to the instructions, it will quickly become active and ready to use.
Thank you for understanding that live cultures can sometimes be a little enthusiastic on their journey!
This active sourdough starter is taken directly from a mature culture that has been maintained for over 30 years. It is fully established, regularly fed and ready to incorporate into your baking routine.
Arriving alive and fermenting, the starter requires only a feed and a short adjustment period before it is ready to leaven bread reliably and consistently.
The culture produces balanced acidity and strong fermentation activity, making it suitable for a wide range of naturally leavened breads, from country boules and bâtards to pizza dough, focaccia and enriched recipes.
A practical choice for bakers who want to begin baking with an established starter without the delay of building one from scratch.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I buy a sourdough starter in the UK?
You can buy a live or dried sourdough starter right here from Sourdough Supply Co., a UK-based bakery supplier. We dispatch quickly from the UK so your starter arrives fresh and ready to bake. Browse all options on our Sourdough Starters collection.
Is it better to buy a live or dried sourdough starter?
A live starter is active and ready to bake straight away, ideal if you want to get going quickly. A dried starter stores longer and is easy to revive with a few feeds. Both come from the same 30-year mature culture, so it comes down to whether you want immediate baking or longer shelf life.
How is the starter delivered?
Your starter is sealed securely and posted within the UK by tracked Royal Mail. A live culture can stay active in transit, so it may look a little bubbly on arrival, which is completely normal.
What do I do when my starter arrives?
Scrape the starter into a clean jar, give it a feed of flour and water, and leave it somewhere warm. Within a day or two it will be bubbling and ready to bake. Full feeding instructions are included with every order.
How old is the culture?
Every starter is taken directly from our mature mother culture that has been fed and maintained continuously for over 30 years, giving it a robust, well-developed flavour.
Can beginners use this starter?
Yes. This starter is beginner-friendly, established and easy to maintain with simple regular feeds. New to sourdough? Add the jar, banneton and tools with our Build Your Own Sourdough Starter Kit.
